Joshua’s Hands is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 A Servant’s Heart Scholarship -- which was established to honor graduating seniors who truly understand the concept of serving others. To date, we have awarded $25,000 in college scholarships.

Francesca wrote about service that became very personal and 24/7 when her family became an emergency foster care home. Although she wanted to serve, she found the constancy of this task a burden and intrusion on her life. She wrote: “Then it occurred to me that I had it easy. I came home from practice to the toddler begging to play, to read, and to play again and the baby crying, or wandering, or needing a diaper change. But this work was spread out between the seven people in my family…What about their mother? Suddenly, I had a glimpse of her life…This woman—this incredible young woman—worked long hours every day to provide for her family. She came home, tired from construction work, to a toddler begging to play and a baby with a diaper to change. All she had was a car. She was tired. She was scared. Here was a girl willing to sacrifice all that she had to put food in her children’s stomachs and a smile on their faces. Here was a mother with a heart full of love that knew not how to fail. Here was a homeless, desperate woman who understood more about love than I did...”
Joshua's Hands was established in 1999 in memory of Joshua Guthrie, who was an enthusiastic community volunteer. Joshua’s years of service were cut short by his death at the age of 16. Joshua’s Hands seeks to continue to be his hands of service in the community and to encourage others to serve.
The organization established A Servant's Heart Scholarship to reward a Loudoun County senior for community service. In 2008, the award was expanded to a potential of three $1000 scholarships.
